Police Rescues 75-year-old Woman Kidnapped in Anambra

The Anambra Police Command on Monday confirmed the rescue of a 75-year-old woman, simply identified as Mrs. Edeh, kidnapped by a four-man gang at Ihiala Local Government Area.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Emeka Chukwuemeka, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Awka that the victim was kidnapped on Monday morning at about 8 a.m.

Mr. Chukwuemeka said that the woman was rescued after a 30 minutes gunfight with the bandits.

The spokesman said the kidnappers, who abducted Mrs. Edeh in a 190 Mercedez Benz car at Umunamehi in Ihiala, shot sporadically in the air to scare away people. He said that the shooting attracted the attention of passers-by who alerted the police.

Mr. Chukwuemeka said that policemen, who were drafted to the scene, chased the suspects to the nearby community of Uli where they challenged the police to a gunfight. The shoot-out resulted in the arrest of one of the abductors while the other three escaped by jumping into the bush and abandoning their victim in the car.

“The suspect, a 25-year-old man was arrested and is now assisting the police in its investigations,” he said. A witness said that when the suspect was being taken to the police station at Uli, the police had to restrain youth from the area who attempted to lynch him.
