Announcing the release of the results at Yaba, Lagos head office of the Council, the Head of the Nigeria National Office, Mr. Charles Eguridu, said of the 1,689,188 candidates who registered for the examination, 1,671,268 actually participated.
Of this figure, according to him, 1,543,683 candidates (representing 91.38 per cent) had their results fully released, while 145,505 candidates (representing 8.62 per cent) had few of their subjects still being processed for various errors and omissions mostly traceable to candidates and their schools.
The Council’s boss, who further disclosed that the results of 112,865 candidates, representing 6.75 per cent are being withheld for cases of alleged malpractices, noted that from 117 visually impaired who sat for the examination, only 24 of them (representing 20.51 per cent) obtained credit pass and above in five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.
On the percentage of candidates, who obtained credit and above in five subjects including English Language and Mathematics, which is the minimum academic qualification for admission into tertiary institutions, Eguridu said the statistic was unavailable.
According to him, the Council was unable to provide this statistic because many candidates in the North-East have partial results at the moment due to security challenges encountered there during the conduct of the examination, particularly loss of scripts.
He explained that the Council was addressing the issue and would communicate to the affected candidates when through with their results.
The WAEC boss, however, said: “There is a slight improvement in this year’s result generally over that of last year.”
Eguridu, who disclosed that the reports on cases of examination malpractice had been compiled for presentation to the Council’s Examination Committee for necessary action, said candidates would be able to check their results on the WAEC’s website within the next 24 hours.
